What is a Manicule?

The manicule symbol is a punctuation mark. It derives from the Latin manicula, simply meaning 'little hand'. Other names for the symbol include: digit, index, pointing hand, fist, bishop's fist, and indicator. The symbol is rarely used today but was in common usage from the 12th century up until the 18th century. It was most often used in the margins of books, typically employed as a symbol to direct the reader's attention to important text. Readers of manuscripts would also themselves often draw manicules in margins of books to highlight areas which were of particular interest to them.

We think the manicule is a lovely symbol and there are some beautiful examples of them still found today on signs all over the world.

What delivery service do you use?

We use Royal Mail (www.royalmail.com) to ship all orders. You will be able to select from the following delivery options during the checkout process. Within the United Kingdom items can be sent using either First Class Delivery or Special Delivery, which requires a signature upon delivery. The best way to be kept up to date with new releases at The Manicule is to sign up to our mailing list. The email submission form can be found on the left of every page. If you have trouble signing up please email us and we will add your address manually.
